World Half Marathon bronze medallist, Yalemzerf Yehualaw smashed the World 10 km Record at the 10km Castellon that was held on Sunday (27) in Castellon, Spain.
The 22-year old broke the previous ratified record of Joyciline Jepkosgei of 29:43 that she set in 2017 in Valencia.
The 2019 African Games half marathon champion also erased the unratified world record of 29:38 that was set by Bahrain’s Kalkidan Gezahegne last year when she cut the in a new world record of 29:14.
This record makes Yehualaw the first woman to run a 10 km under 29:30 and 29:20 on the roads. She 5 km mark in just 14:28. After that, she only took 14:46 to cover her last 5 km.
Yalemzerf’s first 5km is now the second fastest time over the distance by any woman.
There are only two women who have run a faster 10 km. However, all of those two records were set on track.
The two women are; Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey’s time of 29:01.03 and Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands time of 29:06.82. The two women to have the fastest 10km time on track.
