Kenya’s Jackline Cherono took the top honors in the women marathon race at the 100th edition of the Kosice Peace Marathon held on Sunday (01) in Košice, Slovakia
The 25 year-old last year had a career threatening road accident, that tore her calf open and needed ten stitches, came to this race with a personal best of 2:30.21 that she got at the Enschede Marathon in April of this year where she finished in fourth place.
Cherono who is also the 2014 African Youth Games 2000m silver medallist cut off almost six minutes of her life time best to cut the tape first in a new personal best of 2:24.43, missing out on the course record with eight seconds.
Cherono who was the lone Kenyan on the start-list and a former water and barrier specialist, fought off four Ethiopia’s as she was followed on in second place by Ethiopia’s Adawork Aberta Sadura who crossed the line one minute thirty six seconds later with her compatriot Ayantu Kumela Tadesse closing the podium three finishes in 2:26.33.
Ethiopia’s Ebsite Tilahun Asres and Medhin Gebreslassie finished in fourth and fifth place in respective time of 2:28.02 and 2:28.59
The race course record of 2:24.35 set two years ago by Ethiopia’s Ayuntu Tadesse remains standing.
