World under-20 5,000m champion Rhonex Kipruto will be bidding for the Safaricom Isaiah Kiplagat Memmorial Ndalat Gaa cross country in Nandi County on Saturday (October 13).
Kipruto who is also the Africa Cross Country Under-20 is expected to star in the men’s junior race.
On September 8, the Kenyan fast-rising Kipruto came within two seconds of the world record at the at the Birell Prague 10km race an IAAF Gold Label road race. His winning time of 26:46 is the second-fastest 10km performance in history second-fastest 10km performance in history behind Leonard Komon’s 26:44 world record from 2010.
Isaiah Kiplagat Memmorial Ndalat Gaa cross country defending champions Noah Kipkorir and Sandra Chebet will lead 4000 athletes expected as they defend their titles in this year’s Ndalat Gaa Cross country set for Ndalaat Gaa Girls high school.
The organisers have set aside Sh3 million in total prize money will be up for grabs, with the winners in the elite senior men 10km and women covering 8 kilometres each receiving Sh50,000 each, runners up Sh45,000 each and third-placed finishers Sh40,000.
According to the organizers the races will feature all the way from school children to veterans with hundreds of runners expected to participate.
The race will feature different categories: Boys and Girls, 2km 4-6 years boys and girls (school teams), 4km 7-10 years boys and girls (school teams), 6km secondary school girls (school teams), 8km secondary school boys (school teams), 4km senior women (elites), 4km senior men (elites), 6km senior women (elites), 10km senior men (elites), 4km senior women (35-45 years), 2km senior women (46 years and above), 4km senior men (40-50 years), 2km senior men (46 years and above).
Event organising committee chief executive officer Kennedy Tanui, said routes will remain unchanged from last year but spectator areas will be enhanced to accommodate the expected larger numbers.
The Ndalat race was founded by the late former AK President Isaiah Kiplagat and has been sponsored by, among others, Safaricom Nandi County Government, Mosop Constituency Development Fund, Amaco Insurance, Skyward, Kenya Pipeline Foundation, Kenya Seed, Paramount Bank, New KCC, Kenya Dairy Board among others.
