Africa 1500m champion Winny Chebet gave team Africa another reason to smile on Day one at the Continental Cup Ostrava 2018 when she won the 1500m gold.
Chebet took to the front in the early stages as her rivals seemed content to follow her at a leisurely pace, with the opening lap run outside 73 seconds. The leader and the pace remained constant for another 500m, before Shelby Houlihan made the first move. She moved into the lead, but not for long. To the delight of the crowd, the Czech Simona Vrzalova put in a burst of speed on the last straight of the penultimate lap to move past everyone.
Chebet made a quick move to go to the front with a powerful kick crossing the line 4:16.01 with Houlihan coming home second in 4:16.36. Moroccan Rababe Arafi closed the podium three finishes in 4:17.19
