Emmanuel Wanyonyi was on fire as he performed what was never expected to give Kenya the sixth gold medal at the ongoing World U20 Athletics Championships being held at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani Nairobi.
Wanyonyi, the form two student at Kosirai secondary school won gold for the country as Noah Kibet settled for bronze in one of the fastest race with the winner coming home with a championships record of 1:43.76 ahead of Algeria’s Mohamed Ali Gouaned who timed 1:44.45 and Kibet for bronze in 1:44.88.
Wanyonyi said that they had a plan alongside Kibet to run as a team but there was too much of push and pull hence failing to work on their strategy for a 1-2 podium finish.
“As much as I have won the title, it wasn’t easy for. I had to work extra hard, pushing ahead to win,” said Wanyonyi.
He added that that the race had too much pressure since everybody wanted to win but Giod guided him to victory in one of the tough races of his life.
