Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa destroyed the World Women Marathon record at the 49th edition of the Berlin Marathon held on Sunday in Berlin Germany.
The 29 year-old cut down nearly four minutes from her own record, smashing Brigid Kosgei’s World Record of 2:14.04 that she set in 2019 at Chicago Marathon with a new world record of 2:11.53.
“I didn’t expect to run this fast that is to say to break 2:12, but it is the result of hard work. As for being now a favourite for the Olympic Marathon next year, it is up to the National Committee to select me for the team” said Assefa.
The defending champion was followed in second place by the only Kenyan woman on the startlist, Sheila Chepkirui who crossed the line in her second fastest time of 2:17.49 with Tanzania’s Magdalena Shauri seeting a huge personal best of 2:18.41 as she wrapped up the podium three finishes.
