Ulfata Gelata became the second man from Ethiopia to win the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon which is in its sixth edition dethroning the dominance by the Kenyan athletes.
Geleta, finished as the first runner-up last year, this time upgraded to the first position though he had to battle for honors with the race course record holder David Barmasai (2:10.23) and Emmanuel Naibei from Kenya but he held the two to cut the tape with the second fastest time of 2:11.54
Barmasai and Naibei pocketed a cool $20,000 and $15,000, respectively.
Dagne Siranesh Yirga from Ethiopia ran away with the title in the women category cutting the tape in 2:33.50.
She was followed in second place by compatriot Alemenseh Guta and Kenya’s Naomi Maiyo in third place.
This is the second time that Ethiopians have won both the male and female categories of the Lagos City Marathon.
