Twins sister Purity Kajuju Gitonga and Caroline Makandi Gitonga from Kenya dominated the women 21km race at the 23rd edition of the Udine Half Marathon held on Sunday (17) in the City of Udine, Italy.
The twins who are just fresh from winning the BARMER Alsterlauf Hamburg 10k in Germany where they also took position 1-2 which they replicated the same in Italy.
Purity was the first to cut the tape in a personal best of 1:08.58 with her twin coming a distant later in second place in 1:10.13. Both were making their debut over the distance.
Burudi’s Cavaline Nahimana finished in third place in 1:12.33.
Two Ethiopians Deyene Debela Dibase and Andualem Tadesse Betselot finished in fourth and fifth place in respective time of 1:12.57 and 1:14.39.
The race course record of 1:07.23 set twenty years ago by Margaret Okayo from Kenya remains standing.
