Ethiopia’s Tsige Haileslase Abreha of Ethiopia smashed the course record at the 16th edition of Sanlam Cape Town Marathon held on Sunday (15) in Cape Town, South Africa.
The 23 year-old who came to this race with the fastest time on paper of 2:22.10 that she got early this year at the Haspa Marathon champion where she finished in fourth place, beat strong field that included the defending champion and course record holder Lydia Naliaka Simiyu and her compatriot Melesech Tsegaye Beyene who held the third fastest time of 2:24.47.
Abreha who made her debut over the distance last year with a time of 2:31.41 that she got while taking the Stockholm Marathon honors, took her second title in Cape Town in new course record time 2:24.17.
ABreha who led 1 -2-3 Ethiopian podium finish was followed in second a distant later by Beyene in 2:26.23 with Shewarge Alene Amare closing the podium three in 2:27.27.
Kenya’s Sheila Chepkech and the defending champion Simiyu finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 2:27.41 and 2:29.04 respectively.
