Kenya’s Titus Ekiru thrashed the course record of the 38th edition of the Mexico City Marathon that was held on Sunday (26) in Mexico City.
The 26 year-old led a 1-2-3 Kenyan podium finish as he led a group of runners who passed halfway mark in 1:06.08.
Ekiru took off from the crowd after 30km mark and he began to accelerate as he was chased behind by Edwin Koech and Mathew Kisorio who could not match his pace.
Ekiru held on to cut the tape in a new course record of 2:10.38 cutting two minutes off from the previous record of 2:12.10 that was set by Hillary Kipchirchir also from Kenya in 2010.
The second place was taken by Koech who crossed the line two minutes later with Kisorio who was the race favorite (2:06.36) closing the podium in 2:13.18.
