Beatrice Cheptoo wins the Melbourne Marathon

Kenya’s Beatrice Cheptoo took the top honors at the 44th edition of the Melbourne Marathon held on Sunday (02) in Melbourne, Australia.

Cheptoo who was the only Kenyan on the start line up came to this race with the fastest time on paper of 2:25.20 that she got at the 2021 Zurich Marathon where she finished in third place. The Kenyan lived up to the expectations of the race organisers as she destroyed the entire Australian contingent when she crossed the finish line in her second personal best time of 2:27.59.

Australia’s Izzi Batt Doyle who was making her marathon debut surprised many as she crossed the line in a new personal best of 2:28.11 with Ethiopia’s Yeneabeba Maru Ejigu closing the podium three finishes in a time of 2:28.55.

Vanessa Wilson and Deborah Bruce both from Australia finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 2:39.53 and 2:40.34 respectively.

The race course record of 2:25.19 that was set in 2018 by Australia’s Sinead Diver remains standing.
