Olympic 5000m bronze medallist Gudaf Tsegay set the 1500m race second-fastest time in history of indoors games at the ORLEN Copernicus Cup which is a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series, that was held on Tuesday (22) in Torun, Poland.
Tsegay set the World indoor Record of 3:53.09 last year in Lievin and yesterday she set the second fastest time in history of 3:54.77becoming the only person in Indoor games to have two leading times in the world in recent times.
“I did not set a world record, but I am happy with my race. My feelings are really good. I am still 50-50 on whether to go to the World Indoors. The main goal is the World outdoor Championships. I had injury problems at the Olympics last year. I don’t want to make the same mistakes I made last year”, said Tsegay.
Tsegay led 1-2-3 Ethiopian podium finish in a race that was dominated by her country. She was followed by World U18 champion Lemlem Hailu who crossed the a distant later in a time of 4:02.25 with Freweyni Hailu who finished fourth in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics game closing the first three podium finishes in a time of 4:02.50.
Habitam Alemu and Hirut Meshesha came home in fourth and fifth place in a time of 4:02.52 and 4:03.22 respectively.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Winnie Nanyiondo from Uganda and Sara Kuivisto from Finland improved their personal best as they clocked 4:03.54 and 4:06.14 respectively.
