Masterchef contestant Matt Campbell has died after collapsing during the London marathon.

“He was running for The Brathay Trust and in memory of his father, Martin, who died in the summer of 2016.

“Matt’s family today paid tribute to their inspirational son and brother, who was a keen marathon runner and had earlier this month completed the Manchester Marathon in under three hours.

“Matt’s chosen charity, The Brathay Trust, inspires vulnerable young people to make positive changes in their lives: his fundraising page is here.

“Everyone involved in the organisation of the London Marathon would like to express our sincere condolences to Matt’s family and friends.”

Matt had posted on the Masterchef UK Facebook page before the start of the race.

He wrote: “Myself and Tom Peters after meeting in the final 12 of MasterChef have decided to run London Marathon together, I’m running for @brathayevents and Tom is running for @asthmauk.

“We are nervous but feeling fit and ready! Gonna be as hot as the MasterChef kitchen was last year it looks like.”

The race which took place in London over the weekend experienced record temperatures and racers were warned ahead of taking part.

Eleven runners have died in the London Marathon since the race first took place in 1981.
