Kenya’s Viola Chepngeno won the Gent Half Marathon that was held on Sunday (13) in Gent, Belgium.
Chepngeno battled for the honors with her compatriot Beatrice Mutai and Uganda’s Rachael Zena Chebet but she was too superior for the two cutting the tape in a new personal best of 1:07.25 with Mutai crossing the line in second place four seconds later.
Chebet closed the first three podium finishes in a time of 1:09.47.
Netherlands Jill Holterman could not lower her personal best as she came home in fourth place with Hanna Vandenbusscheger from Belgium coming home in fifth in 1:12.50 and 1:13.47 respectively.
Former WorldU20 3000m steeplechase champion Leonard Kipkemoi Bett and World under 20 silver medalist Sandrafelis Chebet were the winners of South Rift Cross Country championships that were held today (Saturday 8) at the Njoro Boys High school in Nakuru County.
The 21 year-old was pushed to the wire by Geoffrey Kimutai who pushed him to the tape with the latter cutting the tape in 28:23, one second ahead of Kimutai. Andrew Mangati came home in third place in a time of 28:34.
Chebet who is fresh from winning the Sao Silvestre de Sao Paulo cross country ran away with the women title 32:03 ahead of Viola Chepngeno in 32:11 with Fancy Cherono taking in bronze medal in a time of 32:21.
Faith Cherono came home in fourth with the 2013 World silver medalist Champion, Mercy Cherono finishing in fifth in 32:54 and 33:07 respectively.
West Pokot’s Sharon Chelimo defeated her opponents to lift the Eldama Ravine Half marathon that was held on Saturday (30) in Ravine, Baringo County.
Chelimo beat her closest challenger Catherine Reline as she cut the tape in 1:12.55 with Revine coming in second in 1:13.15. Uasin Gishu’s Jackline Chekal completed the podium three in a time of 1:13.36.
Beatrice Chepkemoi and Viola Chepngeno finished in fourth and fifth place in 1:14.21 and 1:14.42 respectively.
