Ethiopia’s Tokyo 2020 paralympic 1500m gold medallist, Tigist Gezahegn was honored yesterday (16) by the Ethiopian government for her superb performance and bringing home Ethiopia’s first ever Paralympic games gold medal.
Gezahegn received a prize of 2.8 million birr (Kshs 6,653,945.20) and 40 gram gold during the celebration to honor the Paralympic team at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis.
Gezahegn will be remembered in the history of the Para games when she crossed the line in her T13 race category in 4:23.24 to win the first gold for the country.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was full of praise for her performance. He was quoted by the media saying, “Ethiopia is proud of you!”
Those who were awarded included head coach Nigatu Mariam and the team doctor.
Ethiopia won her first ever silver at the 2012 Paralympic Games through Wondye Fikre and also at the 2016 Rio Olympics through Tamiru Demissie.
