Double Olympic champion Sifan Hassan will make her season debut at the Stumptown Twilight Meet that will be held on Friday in Portland, Oregon.
The 29 year-old who is the Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m Champion has not run in a single race since September 9 last year. Hassan will use this race for preparation for next week’s World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she will contest in the 1500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m.
At the Tokyo Olympics last year, Hassan won the 5,000m and 10,000m and took the 1500m bronze. She became the first women to complete the long-distance track double.
Hassan began the year with training stints in Namibia and Ethiopia which according to her according to her coach Tim Rowberry, they were not as productive as usual.
“Fasting during Ramadan this year also interrupted training more than usual, so I felt it was necessary to postpone her races leading into Prefontaine rather than interrupt the slow training buildup,” said Rowberry.
