Usain Bolt set to start professional football career under ex-Man United coach

Usain Bolt is in talks with Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners as he looks to realise his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

The Olympic legend is ready to head down under for six-week trial period, with the offer of a one-season contract on the table if he impresses.

A statement from the club read: “The Central Coast Mariners remain committed to discussions with the world’s fastest man and his management team, regarding what role the club may play in Bolt’s burning ambition to become a professional footballer.”

Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp, speaking to Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, added: “This is a very real football opportunity, this is not a stunt or gimmick – we want to know if Usain can play.

“If he can, let’s light up the A-League and bring one of the biggest named athletes in sport to the central coast.”

An eight-time Olympic gold medallist, Bolt hung up his spikes in 2017 but still holds the title of the fastest man on the planet.

He is the current world record holder in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4 × 100 metres relay.

Bolt is an avid Manchester United fan and has regularly spoken of his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

The 31-year-old has trialled with German giants Borussia Dortmund and Norwegian side Stromsgodset but is now ready to head to Australia.

Should he join the Mariners, he will link up with a former Manchester United assistant, Mike Phelan, who was recently appointed as sporting director of the club.

Bolt’s agent, Tony Rallis, told the Big Sports Breakfast on Tuesday: “The deal between the Mariners and Usain Bolt in principle has been agreed, subject to a couple of benchmarks,”

“Mainly, a trial, and of course marquee funds support from the FFA. Once the FFA comes back and says that they’ll be part of the process, we’re going to the trial.”
