Maurine Chepkemoi destroys the Enschede marathon course record

Kenya’s Maurine Chepkemoi destroyed the course record at the 75th edition of the Enschede marathon that was held on Sunday (24) in Enschede, Netherlands.

The 23 year-old came to this race with the fastest time on paper of 2:20.18 that she got at the 2021 Amsterdam Marathon, where she took the silver medal.

Chepkemoi took charge of the race from the 30km mark leaving the leading group of Alemtsehay Asefa from Ethiopia and her compatriot Caroline Jepchirchir behind with her eyes set on the course record of 2:25.59 that was set by Katharina Steinruck from Germany in 2021.

The 2021 Geneva Marathon champion increased her pace with 2km remaining to smash the old record by more than four minutes as she set a new course record time of 2:21.10.

Chepkemoi was followed a distant later by Asefa who crossed the line with over three minutes later in a time of 2:24.42 with Jepchirchir closing the podium finish in 2:26.11.

Ethiopia’s Aberash Feyesa and Naomi Jebet finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 2:26.43 and 2:28.00 respectively.

Langat Sibbling Rivalry plays out in Sotokoto Race

The Langa’t’s sibbling rivalry was brought on the of the Sotokoto Safari Marathon 10km race course as Lang’at  brothers dominated the ninth edition of the event at  the Kenya Agricultural Livestock and Research Organization (KALRO) in Muguga, Kiambu County on Sunday.

Leonard, the younger Langat beat his elder brother Kipkurui into the second place by breasting the tape in 32:40.

Kipkurui returned 32:48 to be placed second as Justus Musyoka settled for the last podium finish place in 34.24.

The Bomet based Leonard winner of the 2016 Sotokoto and Masai Mara half marathons broke away from the leading pack after 2km and didn’t look back, leading all the way to the finish line.

The winner who was placed second in CBC marathon in Netherlands and fourth in Barcelona this year said he was using the race to prepare for the Shanghai Marathon in November.

The Venloop Half Marathon champion Naomi Jebet from Elgeyo Marakwet won the top honours in the women’s 10km race.

Jebet stopped the timer in 38.02 beating her closest challenger Ruth Karanja into second place in 38.09 as Edna Mutahi was third by clocking 38.38.

Jebet who was placed fourth in the last edition of the Sotokoto Marathon 21km race said she didn’t expect to win the race but was contented with results.

“I expected to get a podium finish place but not a win after discovering that there was no half marathon which I had prepared for and there was only 10km race on offer,” she said.

Lilian Nga’ng’a wife to the Machakos County Government Governor Dr Alfred Mutua participated in the race and managed to clock one hour and twenty four seconds

The race started at KALRO main field then the course headed to ACK Church, Kandegwa NurserylSchool, Genetic Research Institute, passed by the Savanah Land grass, Veterinary Science Research Institute, Kikuyu CDF Nguriunduti Police Post, Utafiti Primary School, Nguriunduti Primary School, KALRO Main Gate, Fairlawns Primary School before finishing at the main field.
