Ethiopia punishes Kenya at Lanzhou International Marathon

Ethiopia’s Kelkile Gezahegn Woldaregay defended his title at the 7th edition of the Lanzhou International Marathon that held on Sunday (9) alongside the Yellow River in Lanzhou, China.

Woldaregay fought for his survival between a fleet of seven Kenyans who were baying for his blood but he maintained his cool and outclassed them to cut the tape in 2:11.00 lowering his time with fifty four seconds.

Ernest Kiprono Ngeno followed him in second place crossing the line thrty seconds later with another Kenyan Alex Saekwo closing the first three positions in 2:13.01.

Two more Kenyans, Joshua Kipkorir and Philip Kangogo crossed the line in fourth and fifth in 2:13.16 and 2:13.27.

In the women race it was another shocker as the Ethiopians continued their dominance Merima Mohamed Hasen led an Ethiopian 1-2-3-4 finish.

The 26 year-old who can to this race as the fastest ever teenager with a time of 2:23.06 showed how in form she was as she battled her fellow country mate to the tape to beat her with micro seconds cutting the tape in 2:32.22.

She was followed closesly with Kebede Megertu Alemu who also recorded the same time. The 2017 Hangzhou Marathon winner wrapped up the first top three positions when she crossed the line eleven seconds later.

Tigist Girma Getachew took fourth place in 2:32.52 with Mercy Kibarus was the first Kenyan to cross placed fifth in 2:34.25 with Grace Momanyi also from Kenya finishing sixth in 2:34.50
