Lucy Cheruiyot smashes the Mexico City Marathon course record

Kenya’s Lucy Cheruiyot smashed the race course record at the 38th edition of the Mexico City Marathon that was held on Sunday (28) in Mexico City.

Cheruiyot took the charge of the race from the gun point and never relinquished the position as she chased the race course record of 2:33.27 that was set by Vivian Kiplangat from Kenya in 2019.

The 24 years-old went ahead unopposed as she passed the 10km mark with a time of 33:17, she had a difference in favor of almost three minutes over Amare Shewarge and Mexican Isabel Oropeza, who later couldn’t stand the pace.

Cheruiyot pulled herself further from the chasing group cutting the tape in a new course record of 2:27.22. Ethiopia’s Shewarge came home in second place after ten minutes. Leah Jebiwott from Kenya closed the first three podium finishes in 2:40.34

Titus Ekiru thrashes the course record of Mexico City Marathon

Kenya’s Titus Ekiru thrashed the course record of the 38th edition of the Mexico City Marathon that was held on Sunday (26) in Mexico City.

The 26 year-old led a 1-2-3 Kenyan podium finish as he led a group of runners who passed halfway mark in 1:06.08.

Ekiru took off from the crowd after 30km mark and he began to accelerate as he was chased behind by Edwin Koech and Mathew Kisorio who could not match his pace.

Ekiru held on to cut the tape in a new course record of 2:10.38 cutting two minutes off from the previous record of 2:12.10 that was set by Hillary Kipchirchir also from Kenya in 2010.

The second place was taken by Koech who crossed the line two minutes later with Kisorio who was the race favorite (2:06.36) closing the podium in 2:13.18.

Kisorio to face Defending champion Kebede at Mexico City Marathon

Kenya’s Mathew Kisorio will be looking for top honors at the 36th edition of the Mexico City International Marathon that will be held on Sunday (26) in Mexico.

The 29 year-old comes to this race with a personal best of 2:06.33 that he got in 2015 at the Valencia marathon. The Kenyan will face off with the defending champion Fikadu Kebede from Ethiopia who won last year’s edition with a lifetime time best of 2:09.37.

Kebede beat Bahrain’s Isaac Korir in the last kilometer to become the second Ethiopian man in five years to win the largest race in Latin America.

Kisorio comes to this race with a season best of 2:06.36 that he got in April at the Paris Marathon will also battle with fellow country-mate led by  Felix Kipchirchir Kiprotich who a PB of 2:06.54 that he got at the 2017 Gongju Marathon in Korea and Edwin Kipngetich Koech of 2:07.13 that he got at the 2017 Milano Marathon. Also on the start list is Titus Ekiru of 2:07.43 that he got at the Sevilla Marathon in 2017.This three athletes had the fastest marathon times in 2017.

The race will also feature a friendly “rematch” between two of Mexico’s most decorated distance runners: two-time New York Marathon winner German Silva and his runner-up in 1994, Benjamín Paredes.

“Benja (Benjamin) and I were part of a generation of Mexican (runners) who achieved great things. We stood out for our dedication and discipline and we then prepare to share our knowledge. It will be emotional to run with him after so many years,” said Silva.
