Kenya’s Lanny Rutto broke the race course record at the 3rd edition of the İzmir Marathon that was held on Sunday (16) in Izmir, Turkey.
Rutto took led 1-2-3 Kenyan podium finish as he chased the old course record of 2:09.35 that was set last year by Tsegaye Getachew from Ethiopia.
Rutto fought off his two compatriots, Meshack Kiprop Koech and Mathew Kemboi who gave him a hard time on the “Turkey’s fastest track” but he managed to hold them off at the 35km mar and forged ahead increasing his pace to run the remaining 7km alone to cut the tape in a new course record of 2:09.27 cutting off eight seconds from the previous course.
Koech came home in second place a distant later crossing the line in 2:11.21 with Kemboi closing the podium three finishes in a time of 2:13.03.
The first Turkey to cross the finish line was Yavuz Ağralı who came home in eight place in 2:20.02
