Omanyala crushes the championships record in Mauritius

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala crushed the 100m African championships record at the 22nd edition Africa Senior Athletics championships in Reduit, Mauritius.

The 26-year-old Kenyan National Record holder beat his South African opponent Akani Simbine in a photo finish, with Omanyala winning the race by three thousandths of a second, crossing the line in 9.927 seconds, ahead of Simbine who clocked in at 9.930.

The 26 year-old smashed the old record of 9.94 that was set by Simbine with a new record of 9.94 as he went on to gift Kenya its second 100m gold. The first gold was won by Joseph Gikonyo in Cairo thirty two years ago.

South Africa’s Henricho Bruintjies closed the podium three finishes in 10.01.

The continents fastest man with a time of 9.77 has now beaten Simbine for times in all the events they have participated in. Omanyala currently holds the fastest time this season of 9.85 that he set in April during the Kip Keino Classic where he took the honors.

The 2019 African Games champion Raymond Ekevwo from Nigeria and Cameroonian Emmanuel Eseme finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 10.03 and 10.06 seconds respectively.

 

 

Gold and Record is my target, says omanyala

Africa’s finest and fastest athlete Ferdinand Omanyala is targeting his maiden 100m gold with an aim of breaking the championship record.

The national 100m champion will be battling for gold against Commonwealth games 100m champion Akan Sumbine in the second day of Africa Senior Athletics championships in Reduit, Mauritius.

A show down looms between him and the second fastest man on the continent Simbine whom he has met three times and beaten him in all events they have participated in.

Speaking exclusively on phone with athletics.co.ke, the 26 years-old is focused to top the podium with the first 100m gold medal for Kenya and run a sub ten with mind set on the championships record which now stands at 9.94.

“My is body reacting well, No fatigue heading to the finals and am chasing to lower the Championship record and win my country the first 100m gold medal,” said Omanyala.

Omanyala currently holds the world leading time of 9.85 that he set last month when winning the Kip Keino Classic, second fastest time of 10.07 after running his first race in 10.05 seconds to sail to today’s finals.

Simbine from South Africa was the second fastest with a time of 10.09 after taking the honors in heat three.

Nigeria’s Emmanuel Esseme Alobwede won the heat two with a time of 10.19 seconds and was followed by Henricho Bruintjie from South Africa in 10.21 seconds.

Eight athletes have qualified for the finals which will be held tomorrow at 16.10.

Ferdinand Omanyala blazes to the 100m finals with second fastest time in Mauritius

Kenya’s sensational and Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala blazed into the finals of 100m race at the ongoing 22nd edition of the Africa Senior Athletics Championships being held at the newly refurbished Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Reduit, Mauritius.

The 26 year-old who is a man on a mission, took the honors with the second fastest time of 10.07 after running his first race in 10.05 seconds.

Africa’s second fastest man Akani Simbine from South Africa was the second fastest with a time of 10.09 after taking the honors in heat three.

Nigeria’s Emmanuel Esseme Alobwede won the heat two with a time of 10.19 seconds and was followed by Henricho Bruintjie from South Africa in 10.21 seconds.

Eight athletes have qualified for the finals which will be held tomorrow at 16.10.

Caster claims gold, smashes 18-year old 400m national record

Team South Africa was off to the perfect start on day three of the 21st African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria on Friday with Caster Semenya winning gold in the 400m event.

Semenya stopped the clock in a national record of 49.96. The record, previously held by Heide Seyerling, had stood for 18 years.

Semenya now holds national records in the 400m, 800m, 1 000m and 1 500m events.

She was followed home by Christine Botslegwe of Botswana in second while Nigeria’s Yinka Ajayi took third.

The men’s relay team of Akani Simbine, Henricho Bruintjies, Simon Magakwe and Emile Erasmusadded the second gold of the night when they won the 4x100m relay event in 38.25 beating Nigeria and Ivory Coast into second and third respectively.

Thapelo Phora added to South Africa’s medal tally by taking silver in the men’s 400m race with Cornel Fredericks claiming silver in the men’s 400m hurdles.

Linique Prinsloo Beneke then claimed bronze in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.38 metres.

Ischke Senekal added another bronze, this time in the women’s discuss with a best throw of 53.82 metres.

South Africa lead the medal table with five golds, 7 silver and 5 bronze.
