Abel Kipchumba runs a world lead at the Road To Records half marathon

Kenya’s Abel Kipchumba took the top honors in the Road To Records half marathon with a world lead time at the Adidas headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Kipchumba led 1-2-3 Kenyan podium finishes as he destroyed the fastest three race favorites that included Alfred Barkach from Kenya of PB 59:46, Girma Bekele Gebre from Ethiopia who was third at the 2019 New York City Marathon and Teklemariam Medhin from Eritrea who had a PB of 61:47.

Kipchumba gave a powerful kick in the 100m to cut the tape in a personal best of 58:48, securing the world’s fastest men’s half marathon time of 2021.

“I am very happy with the personal record,” said Kipchumba.

The race organisers had assembled a strong field to try and lower the world half marathon record of 57:32 that was set in Valencia by Kibiwott Kandie.

Kipchumba lowered the previous world lead time of 58:57 that had been set by Felix Kipkoech from Kenya early this year.

Alexander Mutiso crossed the fine line in second place with a personal best of 59:20 with Amos Kibiwot closing the first three podium finishes in 59:3.4.

Kenya’s Raymond Magut and Phenus Kipleting finished in fourth and fifth place in 1:00.00 and 1:00.08 respectively.
