Ferdinand Omanyala sails to the next round

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala sailed through to the 100m semi-finals after winning his heat five race at the ongoing Commonwealth Games  that are being held in Birmingham.

The 26 year-old won his heat in a time of 10.07 and was followed by Emmanuel Eseme from Cameroon who crossed the line in a personal best 10.08 seconds.

Samwel Bitonye Imeta also made it to the second round after  coming home second in heat nine with a personal best of 10.12

Omanyala crushes the championships record in Mauritius

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala crushed the 100m African championships record at the 22nd edition Africa Senior Athletics championships in Reduit, Mauritius.

The 26-year-old Kenyan National Record holder beat his South African opponent Akani Simbine in a photo finish, with Omanyala winning the race by three thousandths of a second, crossing the line in 9.927 seconds, ahead of Simbine who clocked in at 9.930.

The 26 year-old smashed the old record of 9.94 that was set by Simbine with a new record of 9.94 as he went on to gift Kenya its second 100m gold. The first gold was won by Joseph Gikonyo in Cairo thirty two years ago.

South Africa’s Henricho Bruintjies closed the podium three finishes in 10.01.

The continents fastest man with a time of 9.77 has now beaten Simbine for times in all the events they have participated in. Omanyala currently holds the fastest time this season of 9.85 that he set in April during the Kip Keino Classic where he took the honors.

The 2019 African Games champion Raymond Ekevwo from Nigeria and Cameroonian Emmanuel Eseme finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 10.03 and 10.06 seconds respectively.
