The rematch in Vienna, Leonard Langat Vs Derara Hurisa

Kenya’s Leonard Langat will be heading to defend his title at the 39th edition of the Vienna City Marathon that will be held on April 24, 2022 in Vienna, Austria.

Langat had finished in second place in a time of 2:09.25 but was reinstated to first position after Derara Hurisa was disqualified.

The 31 year-old had to cope with a major obstacle on his way to Vienna last year. He was in that group that also included Vienna’s women’s marathon winner Vibian Chepkirui who were flying via Doha from Nairobi and missed their connecting flight. The plane from Kenya had been delayed. They were stuck in Doha and the airline did not care. So they had to sleep on the floor.

There will be unprecedented depth in Vienna’s men’s elite field with five athletes featuring personal bests of sub 2:06. The elite line up is led by Mekuant Ayenew from Ethiopia who comes to this race with the fastest time on paper of 2:04.46 that he got at the 2020 Zurich Maratón de Sevilla where he took the honors.

Ayenew is the second fastest runner ever entered into a Vienna City Marathon behind former world record holder Dennis Kimetto who had the world leading time of 2:02.57. Kimetto did not finish the 2018 race.

There will also be a rematch between Hurisa, who had crossed the line first last year but was then disqualified for inadvertently wearing an illegal racing shoe, and Langat was declared the winner.

Hurisa became the first athlete to be disqualified for wearing an illegal shoe in a major city marathon last September in Vienna. The Ethiopian had come to the race with a personal best of 2:08.09 and he cu the tape first in a time of 2:09.22. However it appeared that the shoes he wore had a sole thickness of five centimeters while a maximum of four is allowed

These runners bring high quality performances and often emotional stories to our race, “said Race Director Wolfgang Konrad. “We are very happy to welcome back both winners from last year to Vienna. And we keep our fingers crossed for Derara Hurisa, who will also return.

Eritrea’s Goitom Kifle comes to this race with a personal best of 2:05.28 that he got at the 2021 Maraton Valencia Trinidad Alfonso and Bahrain’s Marius Kimutai who comes to the race with 2:05.47 that he got at the 2016 Amsterdam Marathon where finished in bronze position.

The other sub 2:06 athletes include Oqbe Kibrom from Eritrea who also comes with third fastest time of 2:05.53 and Ethiopian Abdi Fufa of personal best of 2:05.57.

The race organisers have assembled this high quality of elite athletes to chase the race course record of 2:05.41 that was set in 2014 by Getu Feleke from Ethiopia.

Joel Kimurer to battle Nicholas Kirwa at the Paris Marathon

Kenya’s Nicholas Kirwa will battle for top honors at the 45th Paris Marathon that will be held on Sunday (17) in Paris, France.

Kirwa comes to this race as the fastest runner on paper with a time of 2:05.01 that he got at the Generali Milano Marathon in May of this year.

The 27 year-old will face off with Joel Kemboi Kimurer whom they met in Milano but Kirwa beat him hands down as he gave a kick of a life time leaving Kimurer with no option but to settle in second 2:05.19.

Two more Kenyans will also be on the start list, Elisha Rotich and Stephen Chebogut. Rotich comes in as the second fastest runner on paper with 2:06.44 while Chebogut has a pb of 2:05.52 that he got at the 2015 Eindhoven Marathon.

Ethiopia have put their hopes in Abdi Fufa who carries a personal best of  2:05.57 that he got early this year at the Xiamen Marathon where he finished in second place.

Ethiopia’s Ashenafi Moges and Moris Munene Gachaga from Kenya have been lined up also to fight for the honors. Moges has a personal best of 2:06.12 that he got at the 2019 Maratón Valencia while Gachaga holds a pb of 2:06.24 that he got at the 2019 Amsterdam Marathon.

France has their hope in the fastest French man Hassan Chahdi who holds 2:09.11.

The race organisers have assembled this team of elite athletes to try and lower the race course record of 2:05.04 that was set in 2014 by Kenenissa Bekele from Ethiopia.
