“Government to crack whip on alleged sponsored Court Cases” Senate Majority Leader says

Athletics Kenya (AK) has been accused of sponsoring two times Boston marathon champion Moses Tanui to sabotage the federation’s elections.

Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot said AK might be funding Tanui who filed a case to stop the AK elections in May 2017 in making the court battle last longer for their continued stay in office.

“The current AK executive has overstayed in office since 2013 when they were last elected. The case filed by Tanui stopping the elections from being held in 2017 up to date is questionable and creates suspicions on Tanui’s motive and character in this scheme of extending the life office of the federation’s officials through the backdoor,” an irritated Cheuiyot stated.

Cheruiyot who serves as the Kericho Senator called on the newly appointed Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba to take up the matter with the Judiciary in resolving the matter of the unending case that has legitimized the illegitimate continued stay in power by the AK officials.

“I would like the new Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba to have a conversation with the athletics stakeholders on the matter for a way forward,” said Cheruiyot.

On April, 28th, 2017, the High Court in Nairobi stopped the scheduled Athletics Kenya elections pending the hearing and determination of a petition he had earlier filed against the federation.

The petition filed in October 2016, challenges the constitution review process that Athletics Kenya had set on motion which led to what they term as ‘undemocratic and unconstitutional’ amendment of the constitution.

The case presented before Justice Chacha Mwita by Moses Tanui and nine other retired athletes argue that the elections were being held under a contentious constitution passed and that’s why they wanted the polls stopped pending the case filed Tanui who is the 1991 Word gold medalist in Athens, Greece.
