Kenyan Tactician to Coach Africa in Continental Cup

Kenya’s head coach at the 2018 Africa Athletics Championships in Asaba has been appointed as the tactician of Africa’s squad for the Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic on September 8-9.

Kenya stamped their mark under Stephen Mwaniki,  by overcoming all  the odds in an event, filled with sideshows ranging from athletes arriving in Asaba, the hosting venue, just three hours to kick-off due to failure to secure the connecting flights from Murtala Muhammad International Airport.
Mwaniki a Kenya Prisons officer first led Kenya to victory when the Africa Senior Athletics Championships were hosted in Nairobi as a head coach in 2010.
After a rather slow pace on the opening day of the championships, Team Kenya under Mwaniki’s inspiration and guidance produced a scintillating show on the final day to top medal standings during the Championships in Asaba, Nigeria.
The victory was Kenya’s fourth since the inaugural edition in 1979.
Boasting World Champions and record holders, Team Kenya topped the medal table with 11 gold, six silver and two bronze medals.
The Continental Cup is held every four years since 2010, replacing the previous Athletics World Cup and involves teams from Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
The four teams competing in the event were Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
The two-day competition comprised a programme of 20 track and field events for men and women, giving a total of 40 events. Each team shall enter two athletes in each event, except for relays where one team competed, with a maximum of one athlete from each country per event. No athlete shall be allowed to double in the 3000 m and 5000m.
