Kenya’s Sylivia Medugu continued her brilliant perfomance at the TCS Lidingö 30km classic race that was held on Saturday (25) in Lindngo Island, Sweden.
Medugu became the first foreign woman to win this race three times after taking the honors at the 2018 and 2019, where she set the race course record of 1:51.57. She did not take part in the 2020 race which was won by Hanna Kumlin in 2:04.56.
Madegu broke away from the lead team of three to surge ahead in a powerful kick cutting the tape in 1:55.03 with Linnéa Sennström from Sweden coming in second in 1:57.52 with Eritrean-Swedish Samrawit Mengsteab closing the first three podium finishes in 1:58.13.
The men’s race offered a thrilling showdown between a starting quartet right from the start. Halfway through the race, Oscar Kibet and Oscar Niyonzima both from Uganda seemed to have the upper hand, but with less than 4km left, Sweden;s Samuel Russom suddenly gave a strong pick-up crossing the finish line in 1:36.56 with second place going to Kibet in 1:38.20. Niyonzima was forced to settle on the third spot when he crossed the line in 1:38.41.
