South Africa’s Stephen Mokoka set a new world 50km record on his debut at the Nedbank Runified 50km which was held on Sunday (6) in Gqeberha, South Africa.
The 37 year-old followed the pacemaker through halfway in 1:21:02, then breaking away at the 30km with a pace of 2:56km to set him on world record schedule.
Mokoka took charge of the race and ran solo to smash the previous record of 2:42.07 that had been set by Ketema Negasa at this same event and setting a new world record of 2:40:13.
“It’s a long way and I don’t know how I’m going to feel later, but I enjoyed it,”said Mokoka.
Given the increasing popularity of 50km road races, the decision to add the distance to the list of events for which world records are recognized was made at the 225th World Athletics Council meeting in Tokyo in July.
