Tokyo Olympics 10,000m bronze medallist, Jacob Kiplimo will face-off with the world 5km record holder, Berihu Aregawi at the Monaco Diamond League Meeting slated for this evening (Friday, 21) at the Stade Louis-II in Monaco, France.
The World Cross Country champion who ran a joint fifth fastest time ever over the twelve and a half lap distance in history, will meet the man who is great shape from his recent performance in Lausanne meeting where he beat the tenth man in history to hold the 5,000m and 10,000m world records concurrently, both set in 2020, Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda.
The two also come from the same stable, Rosa Associati and have met six times with the Ugandan prevailing in all of them, the latest being at the World Cross Country championships in Bathurst where the Ethiopian took silver.
Kiplimo and Aregawi will find the going tougher as they will have to fight the Kenyan trio that includes World 5000m silver medallist, Jacob Krop who will lead his two compatriots, the World 10,000m silver medallist, Stanley Waithaka and the reigning 5000m Diamond league winner Nicholas Kimeli who also beat the trio at the Athletics Kenya National trials for the World Athletics Championships slated for 19-27 August in Budapest.
Other title contenders include Ethiopian trio of Telahun Bekele, Hagos Gebrhiwet, Samuel Tefera, and Kuma Girma
Kiplimo and Aregawi who both share the same age of 22, will have to get past the Tokyo Olympic 5000m silver medallist, Mohammed Ahmed from Canada, World 1500m bronze medallist, Mohammed Katir from Spain and reigning European 10,000m champion, Yemaneberhan Crippa from Italy.
