Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medallist, Sheila Chepkirui smashed the women course record at the Brasov Running Festival 10km Run held on Sunday in Brasov, Romania.
The 31 year-old who came to this race with the fastest time on paper of 29:46 that she got in 2020 at 10K Valencia Ibercaja where she took the honors, scared the women only world record as she missed it with six seconds.
Chepkirui erased the old record of 32:11 that was set last year by Nelly Jepchumba with a new course record of 30:07.
Chepkirui who led a 1-2 Kenyan podium finish was followed by Agnes Ngetich who crossed the line in second in 30:30 with Uganda’s 5000m National Record holder, Sarah Chelangat coming home in third in 30:31. The two also came home under the old course record.
Kenyan born –Romanian athlete Stella Rutto failed in her bid to lower the National Record as she crossed the line four seconds shy of the record with a time of 32:04. She finished in seventh place.
The race was graced by World Women record holder and seven-time World Marathon Majors winner Mary Keitany, who raced in the kids events and was also given the opportunity to reward medals to the winners.
”I really enjoy the city, the weather, the atmosphere, the race, a great course and the excellent conditions for world-class running,” said Keitany,
