Kenya’s Georgina Jepkirui Rono lived to her expectations as the favourite when she broke the course record at the 26th edition of the Lattelecom Riga Marathon that was held on Sunday (20) in Riga, Latvia.
The 37 year-old, was the clear class in the women’s field, building a two-second lead by 5km, and extending it to 11 at 10, reached in 33:47.
Rono passed the 21km mark in 1:11.31, nearly a minute-and-a-half clear of her nearest competitor. This was Rono’s fastest performance since 2014 and the fourth fastest of her career.
The Kenyan held on with a four minute lead to cut the tape in a new course record of 2:28.32 erasing the previous record of 2:31.46 that was set by Ethiopian Bekelech Bedada Daba.
Ethiopia’s Tigist Teshome took second position in 2:32.46 with another Kenyan Pauline Njeri Kahenya closing the podium three in 2:34.41.
