Kenya’s Benard Kibet Koech broke Haile Gebrselassie’s seventeen years record at the 39th edition of the Kumamoto Kosa 10-Mile Road Race held on Sunday (4) in Japan.
The 23 year-old who ran the better part of the race alone took off 20 seconds from Haile Gebrselassie’s world best for 10 miles when he cut the tape in a new course record time of 44:04.
Koech led a 1-2-3 Kenyan podium finish as he was followed a distant latter by Jonathan Ndiku who crossed the finish line in second in 45:47 with cleophas Kandie closing the podium three finishes in a time of 45:49.
The first Japanese to cross the line was Takashi namba who came home in fourth in 45:50, shy off 10 seconds from the National Record that was set 38 years ago by Masanari Shintaku.
