World Cross Country Junior bronze medalist Pamela Kosgei took the top honors at the at the Athletics Kenya North Rift championships held on Friday (09) at the Ndura Sports Complex in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
The championships brought five Counties together namely; Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Turkana.
Kosgei who is the young sister of world marathon record holder Bridgid Kosgei came this competition with a mission of making it to the World Athletics Championships slated for August in Hungary, ran away with the women 3,000m steeplechase title to book for the national championships that will be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in two weeks’ time.
Kosgei who donned the Elgeyo marakwet County Jersey won the race in a time of 10:05.2 ahead of her compatriot Martha Chelimo, who came home in second place in 10:43.9 with Trans Nzoia’s Cren Jepchan wrapping up the podium three in 11:05.3.
“The victory has given me a chance to compete at the national championships as I want to run for the country again in Budapest in senior races,” said Kosgei.
In the men’s category the form four student at St Francis Kimuron in Elgeyo Marakwet Mathew Kipkosgei, who has dominated many local races and even winning the National schools title won the race in a time of 9:00.9, trouncing West Pokot’s Ezekiel Rutto who crossed the finish line in second in 9:15.2 with Elgeyo Marakwet County’s Robert Maiyo closing the podium three in 9:17.0
