Reigning World Mountain Running champion Patrick Kipng’eno defended his title well when he took the top honors at the ongoing World Mountain and Trail Running Championships being held at the Innsbruck-Stubai, Austria.
Kipng’eno won gold for Kenya on the first day in the men’s 7.3km vertical race as he improved on his previous world championships in Thailand with an impressive 1:33 minutes lead and cutting the tape in a time of 40:18.
Kipng’eno who is based in a small municipal town in Eastern Tyrol in Austria beat Uganda’s Levi Kiprotich who came home a distant later in second place in 41:51 with his compatriot Josephat Kiprotich closing the podium three finishes in a time of 42:04.
Kenya’s other representatives—last year’s silver medalist Philemon Kiriago and Hillary Maiyo finished in seventh and twelfth place respectively.
In the women’s category, Kenya’s Philaries Kisang won silver in a time of 48:51 behind Austria’s Andrew Mayr who won the title in 48:14 with United States Grayson Murphy wrapping up the three three in 49:22.
Kenya’s Valentine Ruto and Joyce Muthoni finished in fifth and tenth place in a time of 49:59 and 52:09 respectively.
