The organisers of the second edition of the Onitsha City Marathon that was scheduled to be held on October 25, 2023 in Onitsha, Nigeria, have cancelled this year’s event due to financial challenge.
The Onitsha Business School, who are the race organisers, through a press release by its Deputy Project Manager Ambassador Philip Balepo, said that this year’s event won’t take place as initially planned.
“The Main Organizing Committee (MOC), in conjunction with our Marketing Partners, GLS PROJECTS, looks forward to the 2024 edition. We are sorry for every inconvenience caused, kindly bear with us,” the release said.
The race organisers had planned to use $400,000 as prize money for males and females categories, $200,000 each for the 1 to 10 best winners of the race on international level.
The first edition held in October 2019 had international athletes from the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Kenya, Togo, China, and Cameroon.
The race was expecting more than 2000 athletes, including 1000 foreigners.
Kenya’s ruled the first edition with Bernard Sang and Esther Chesang taking the top honors in the male and female categories.
