Kenya’s Nicholas Kosimbei wrote history on his US debut as he smashed the race course record of the Atlanta Half Marathon that was held on brightened a drizzly Sunday (27) morning in Atlanta, Georgia.
Kosimbei who went to the race with a set mind of breaking away early and taking the early lead and going through the 10K mark in a time of 28:42, maintained his steady lead of almost 30 seconds in front of Raymond Magut and Geoffrey Koech.
The 25 year-old led a 1-2-3 Kenyan podium finish as he crashed he took off over three minutes off the previous course record of 1:03.59 that had been set last year by American Abdisamed Abdi.
“I was expecting to break the course record,” said Kosimbei.
Magut was left with no option but to settle in second also coming home under the previous record with a time of 1:02.49. Koech who came to this race with the second fastest time on paper, closed the podium three places in a time of 1:03.13 which was also under the old record.
Kosimbei, who represents the Marin County Track Club (MCTC) in California, took home a cool prize purse of $3,000 for the win plus a bonus of $2,500 for breaking the record of running the fastest half marathon in the state of Georgia.
