Ethiopia’s Abede Negewo smashed the course record of the 5th edition of the Minsk Half Marathon that was held on Sunday (9) in Minsk, Belarus.
The 34 year-old ended the defending champion and race favorite,Hillary Maiyoi’s winning streak in the Belarusian Capital.
Negewo faced a fierce field of athletes that included Joel Maina Mwangi, Benard Korir, Ethiopia’s Feyera Gemeda.
The pace slowed down as the men passed the 10km mark in 29:50 with the neutral athlete Rinas Akhmadeyev and Gemeda being unable to maintain the pace for much longer and lost contact with the leaders.
Korir soon followed, leaving Negewo and Maiyo at the front with Mwangi a few paces behind as they passed the 15km mark in 44:48.
Negewo and Maiyo battled for the title as they ran neck to neck but the Ethiopian had a superior kick that enabled him to cut the tape in 1:09.39 smashing off Maiyo’s course record of 1:03.00 that he set in 2016.
Maiyo crossed the line second place with the same time too as Mwangi closed the podium three finishes in 1:02.53 running inside the previous course record.
