Kenya’s Gikuni Ndungu won the Grossglockner mountain race, which was the 2018 WMRA World Cup that was held on Sunday (15) in Heiligenblut, Austria.
Ndungu who was the 2017 winner, caught in a fierce battle with Austrian Anton Palzer. The pair ran neck to neck with 2500m remaining, running together and spurred on by the crowd of some 1000 spectators gathered along the upper reaches of the course. As they approached a final steep ascent some 800m before the finish, Ndungu pulled a surprise kick to cut the tape in 1:12.06 win, with Palzer crossing the line 19 seconds later.
Italy’s Francesco Puppi, the winner of the 2017 World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships, closed the podium three finishes in 1:14.18.
Scotland’s Andy Douglas took fourth with Chris Arthur crossing the line in fifth in 1:14.45 and 1:15.08 respectively.
