Sprints coach Stephen Mwaniki has for the second time been appointed as the Team Kenya tactician for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships.
Mwaniki who is Athletics Kenya (AK) Kenya Prisons branch Public Relations Officer (PRO) will be leading Team Kenya at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria scheduled for August 1st-5th.
Mwaniki guided the country’s team to victory during Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Nairobi in 2010 when he was first appointed to the post.
Kenya won the overall title under Mwaniki by scooping 25 medals which included 10 gold, seven silver and right bronze medals at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The AK Central Rift chairman Abraham ‘Solo’ Mutai has been appointed as the Team Manager.
The trials for the Asaba bound team will be held on June 21-23 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The AK supremo Jackson Tuwei said they expected to select a team of between 60-70 athletes during trials to go and do duty for Kenya in Nigeria.
He said the first two to cross the line and the third one to be determined by a technical team of selectors in their selection criteria.
The president said athletes who made Kenya’s team for the World under 20 will be allowed to compete and may be considered to join the senior team if they qualify during the trials.
Tuwei said AK expects several elite athletes to compete given that the this year’s event in Nigeria will be used to select Africa’s team for the Inter Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech republic on September 8-9.
