Kenya’s Veronica Kamumbe Mutua ran the second fastest time in 400m women heats at the ongoing 22nd edition of the Africa Senior Athletics Championships being held at the newly refurbished Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Reduit, Mauritius.
The 30 year-old who was member of the 2018 African championships 4x400m relay team that won silver, won the heat three race with a personal best of 52.97.
Mutua was followed by Malawian Asimenye Simwaka who is also a footballer and plays for Malawi women’s national team. Simwaka who was the lone athlete from their country at the Tokyo Olympics came home in 53.27 and was followed by South Africa’s Precious Molepo and Botswana’s Christine Botlogetswe in 53.32 and 54.02 respectively. Both sailed through as the fastest losers.
Another title contender is Jacinta Shikanda who went through as the fastest loser in a time of 54.73. South Africa’ Miranda Coetzee took the honors in 52.11 and was followed by Zambia’s Niddy Mingilishi in 53.21 with Tsige Gemechu from Ethiopia finishing in third spot in 54.43
