Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (Sjak) held its election for the vacant position of the Secretary general during the Annual general Meeting held in Mombasa.
The hotly contested seat was between Kenya television networks’ (KTN) sports anchor Moses Wakhisi against Royal Media Service (RMS) Isaac Swila.
The seat had been left vacant following the resignation of Citizen TV’s Mike Okinyi who resigned from the position and never defended his post.
Wakhisi was elected overwhelmingly into the as he garnered 69 votes to floor Swila who managed to get 30 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Wakhisi said: “I am truly honored and excited to take on this role and contribute to the growth and development of our association. In this position, my main focus will be on building and strengthening SJAK. I will work closely with President (James Waindi) and the entire executive committee to ensure that we fulfill our mission and vision. Together, we will strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all our members.”
“I am pleased that my senior Swila has pledged to work with all of us and that is leadership at its best. Unity within SJAK is crucial for our success. I believe that by working together and valuing each other’s contributions, we can achieve great things. I am committed to fostering collaboration and open communication among all members of SJAK,” he said adding that in the coming days and weeks, he will be reaching out to each member individually to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations.
In the conceding speech, Swila said that the journey of picking the SJAK SG has been long but members exercised their democratic right by electing Wakhisi to the position.
The elections were conducted by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Rebecca Mutiso a former People Daily Newspaper Editor
