Olympic 800m silver medallist, Keely Hodgkinson beat Commonwealth Games 800m champion, Mary Moraa at the ORLEN Copernicus Cup, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series held on Wednesday (08) in Torun, Poland.
The 20 year-old who is also the European Indoor and Outdoor champion opened her season on a good note when she beat Moraa with a world-leading time of 1:57.87.
“The track brings back some good memories for me. The crowd was thunderous and that carried me away. It was good to get a decent first 800m race of the season,” said Hodgkinson.
The oldest athlete on the start list, Noelie Yarigo from Benin, who is also an Air force officer and was given leave to prepare for the 2016 Olympics in France came home in second place with a National Record time of 1:58.48 with Slovenia’s Anita Horvat, who won at this season’s opening World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Karlsruhe, closing the podium three finishes in 2:01.42.
The race favorite, Moraa, who is also the World Bronze medallist finished in fourth in 2:01.61 with the former world 800m champion, Halima Nakaayi from Uganda also cominmg home in a disappointing fifth in 2:01.64.
