Mary Moraa gifted Kenya the third gold medal in the women’s 800m finals at the just concluded 19thh edition of the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.
The 23 year-old who is also the reigning Commonwealth Games champion destroyed a deep elite field that included the defending champion Athing Mu from the United States and British finest Keely Hodgkinson.
Moraa who raced a tactical race behind Mu, dethroned the Olympic champion in final stretch to become the third Kenyan woman after Janeth Jepkosgei in 20027 and Eunice Sum in 2013 to claim the World title in a new personal best of 1:56.03 with Hodgkinson edging out Mu at the finish in respective time of 1:56.34 and 1:56.61.
Team Kenya ended their quest with total of 10 medals – three golds, three silver and four bronze medals- during the nine day track and field competitions held in Hungary, Budapest.
