The 2017 World Cross Champion, Lilian Kasait Rengeruk will lead four Kenyans in the Women 5000m race at the 47th edition of the Memorial Van Damme Diamond League Meeting set for today (Friday, 08) in Brussels, Belgium.
Rengeruk who returned from an anti-violation doping ban of ten months for the use of prohibited substance (Letrozole) will partner with the 2019 African U20 silver medallist, Edinah Jebitok who holds a season best of 15:01.97, World U20 1500m bronze medallist Winnie Jemutai, Africa Senior 10,000m Champion, Caroline Nyaga who holds a life time best of 15:05.34 and Grace Nawowuna who carries a season best of 14:42.63.
Rengeruk who is also the 2019 Africa Games 5,000m bronze medallist will steer the Kenyan ship as they seek to dethrone World U20 record holder Medina Eisa from Ethiopia who comes to this race with the fastest time on paper of 14:16.54. The 18 year-old wonder kid who won gold in the 5000m at the 2022 World U20 Championships and silver in the junior women’s race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships and was also sixth in the women 5000m race at the just concluded World Championships in Budapest, will be the main threat to the five Kenyans.
Japanese National Record holder in 1500m Nozomi Tanaka and the 2015 European Indoor 3000m bronze medallist, Maureen Koster, the 2018 European 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist and Karoline Grovdal of respective seasonal best of 14:37.98, 14:47.52 and 14:45.24, will also be fighting for the top honors.
The 2021 World U20 800m champion Ayal Dagnachew from EThiopia and Spain’s National 800m champion Lorena Martín will be making a debut over the distance
