Kenyan born Winfred Yavi won gold for Bahrain in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
Yavi blazed the trail to return 9:36.52 for the deserved victory to dethrone the defending champion veteran Indian long distance runner Sudha Singh who settled for silver in the water and jump event.
Sudha a two times Asian Games 3000m clinched silver in 9 minute 40.03 seconds to win her second Asian Games medal as the Southeast Asian Games 5000m champion Thi Oanh Nguyen of Vietnam bagged the bronze in 9:43.83.
Born in1999 in Kenya, Yavi transferred her allegiance to the oil-rich Middle Eastern state at the age of fifteen, becoming eligible to compete for her adopted nation in August 2016.[
She represented Bahrain at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics in London at the age of 17 and finished eighth in the steeplechase final in a personal best time of 9:22.67.
