Kenya’s Athletics pioneer Dan Omwanza passed on today at the Nairobi Hospital after being admitted with high blood pressure on Wednesday.
Omwanza, popularly known as Omoisi Omobe, was the man who was set to complete the line-up of, Robert Ouko, deceased, as well as Charles Asati and Hezekiah Nyamao, having been part of the quartet that qualified during the Olympics trials in Mombasa in 1972.
But when the history of Kenya’s memorable 4x400m relay team that won gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics Games shall be written then the name of Dan Omwanza will be remembered as one who was sacrificed because of his last name.
The most interesting thing is that Julius Sang was not even supposed to be in the team. Omwanza, was the man who was set to complete the line-up, having been part of the quartet that qualified during the Olympics trials in Mombasa in 1972.
He died aged 74.
