The reigning London Marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum will spear head the Kenya marathon team for the World Athletics Championships slated to be held from August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary.
The 23 year-old who won his second consecutive marathon after winning the Valencia Marathon last year with a time of 2:01.53 to become, at the time, the third-fastest man in history, went to history books once again when he ran the second fastest time in the world of 2:01.25 in London that made him supplant Kenenisa Bekele from Ethiopia as the second-fastest man in history, breaking the old course record of 2:02.37 that was set in 2019 by the World marathon record holder, Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya.
Kiptum will have now to forfeit his world record attempt as he prepares to represent the country in Budapest alongside the three time world half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor who was also the runner-up at the just concluded London Marathon.
Kiptum and Kamworor will team up with the Tokyo Marathon fourth finisher Titus Kiprono to chase the team Kenya podium three finishes.
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Michael Githae and the 2023 Rotterdam marathon silver medallist Timothy Kiplagat have been named as reserve for the team Kenya.
