The 2018 African 10,000m Athletics Champion Jemal Yimer Mekonnen smashed Geoffrey Kamworor’s UK All-Comers Record at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon held on Sunday (28) in Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Yimer the fastest ever half marathon debutant with a time of 59:00 that he got in 2019 at Ras al Khaimah half marathon, was too strong for Alfred Ngeno from Kenya who could not hold his pace in the final stages as sailed he sailed through as a lone ranger crossing the finish line in his third fastest time of 59:03.
Ngeno who was left to struggle at a distance came home one minute, fifty six seconds to take the silver medal while last year’s third placed Shadrack Kimining was forced to settle in the same spot as he closed the podium three finishes in a time of 1:01.04.
Last year’s second place finisher Teshfahun Akalnew from Ethiopia finished outside the podium in 1:01.43.
World Indoor 3000m bronze medallist, Marc Scott, who was returning for a third year, after finishing third at last year’s event, finished a distant fifth in 1:02.57.
