Double World 5000m champion Jacob Ingebrigtsen brought down Hicham El Guerrouj’s 2000m world record at the 47th edition of the Brussels Diamond League Meeting held on Friday night in Brussels, Belgium.
The Tokyo Olympic 1500m champion who was defeated by Britain’s Josh Kerr in Budapest last month, smashed El Guerrouj’s fourteen years 2000m record by 1.66sec with a new world record time of 4:43.13.
“It’s always fun to break a record. I knew I was able to break this one, but I had some kind of virus ten days ago and I didn´t really know how I would be feeling today.” said Ingebrigtsen.
Ingebrigtsen who finished five seconds clear of his rivals was followed by reigning World U20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot who set Kenyan record of 4:48.14 with World Cross Country Mixed relay Champion, Stewart McSweyn of Australia clocking an Oceania record of 4:48.77.
Teenage prodigy Niels Laros ran a Dutch National record of 4:49.68 in fourth. Mario Garcia clocked a Spanish record of 4:49.85, just ahead of world 1500m bronze medallist Narve Nordås, the Norwegian running 4:50.64.
World Indoor 1500m bronze medallist, Abel Kipsang finished a disappointing seventh with a 4:50.68.
